Catherine Calvert

Managing Director

Catherine's interests are focused on Community Sustainability -- from small community design assignments to sustainable transit architecture, her work revolves around making positive environmental change through design. Catherine's love of craft and fascination with the process of relocalization led to the creation of VIA's Community Design Studio, designed to serve community needs and solve design issues often not undertaken by architects.

Favorite Project & Why

St. John's Shaughnessy – Transforming this church into a place of serene beauty, forming the backdrop for worship and spiritual milestones was very meaningful to me.  Our relationship with this congregation lasted over 15 years, and I enjoyed every part of the process as it unfolded.

Favorite Thing About Your Job

I love working with the end users of the buildings that I design, using the design process to solve problems and make changes that will improve people's lives.

Favorite Thing to Do

My favorite place in Seattle is the International Fountain at Seattle Center.  I love the way it expresses mood -- everything from a somber remembrance after 9/11 to the exuberance of a summer day.
