TIANJIN SUPERHIGHWAY & RAPID TRANSIT PROJECT
TIANJIN, CHINA

This project entails the creation of an infrastructure spine to connect the historic city of Tianjin with its modern free trade port. A Chinese joint venture had the design/build/operate concession to develop a superhighway and rapid transit system to make this 40km link, and this included the development rights around each highway interchange and rapid transit station.

SNC Lavalin headed a consortium that included VIA Architecture as urban planners, who prepared a feasibility study in 1996 to select the best transportation corridors to serve both industrial and commuter needs. The opportunity was to create an interaction between the management of real estate development and the provision of state of the art transportation that would be a global model for urbanization in developing areas.
