SOUTHEAST FALSE CREEK
VANCOUVER, CANADA

This project is to re-use 50 acres of City owned industrial waterfront to create a residentially oriented mixed-use community, including park space and a commercial village centre. In addition to creating approximately 2600 residential units with a mix of incomes and family types, Vancouver City Council is interested in advancing concepts for sustainable urban development in the inner city.

The challenge has led VIA Architecture to move beyond the already high livability standards we have achieved at Concord Pacific Place. We have developed the SUN model (Sustainable Urban Neighbourhood) to analyze the financial and environmental costs and benefits of “sustainability”. The model’s primary function has been to assist the City with its development pro-forma. This “consequence modeling” also functions as a communication tool to demonstrate to decision makers and the public, the inter-relationship of issues involved in this kind of innovative planning, and the implications of alternative courses of action.
