ST. JOHN’S SHAUGHNESSY CHURCH & PARISH HALL
VANCOUVER, CANADA

This Anglican Church is a well-loved landmark in Vancouver’s Shaughnessy district. Built on a tight budget in 1949, this fine example of the city’s rich heritage of modern architecture was in dire need of extensive interior and exterior refurbishment by 1990.

The St. John’s redesign reworked natural and artificial lighting to ennoble the sense of scale of the interior volume. Working closely with the congregation to translate their spiritual mission into appropriate form, a new spiritual focus in the form of a floating sanctuary cross sidelight by glass windows was created in a new east addition.

Awards: City of Vancouver, Heritage Award (1992); Interior Designers Institute of BC, Gold Medal Award of Excellence (1991)
