Junior Urban Designer/Planner (Vancouver)

We are currently seeking candidates for the Vancouver-office-based position of Junior Urban Designer/Planner to work on long-range planning and policy assignments, including station area, comprehensive and sub area plans as well as large scale infrastructure planning. This person will work closely with our cross disciplinary team committed to place-based design.

VIA Architecture is a strategic architectural and planning firm with offices in Vancouver, BC; Seattle, WA and Oakland CA. We are a studio- based practice leading a variety of local projects including transit systems design, mixed-use infill architecture, community and downtown plans and urban sustainability strategies. We are interested in exceptional candidates with strong analytical and communication skills who are passionate and involved in community building at all scales.

Educational Requirements

  • Masters in Urban Planning or Urban Design (preferred)
  • or Masters in Landscape Architecture
  • or Architecture with a strong basis in Planning or Urban Design

Experience Requirement

  • 2 to 7 years as a Planner or Urban Designer in the public or private sector
  • Career focus on urban design, architecture, sustainability, transportation planning and economic development
  • Ideal candidates have solid experience in urban design in either the Vancouver, Seattle, Portland or San Francisco metro areas
  • Passion for building community and urban livability
  • Positive and collaborative attitude, must be a team player

Key Skills

  • Demonstrated urban design skills
  • Strong Sketchup and Creative Suite skills, working knowledge of additional programs such as AutoCAD, Revit, or GIS considered an asset
  • Excellent written, visual, and verbal communication skills
  • Familiarity and interest in emerging planning sector software such as tools for GHG or VMT analysis

Job Description

This is a position with significant opportunities for responsibility in our planning sector. The Planner/Urban Designer will work on a diverse array of projects for both public and private sector clients with a focus on transit related urban infill, downtown and community planning. This person will work with multidisciplinary teams and have the opportunity to manage deliverables for both short- and long-term planning projects.

The Urban Designer/Planner will be responsible for:

  • Supporting urban design project assignments, working closely with internal teams and project management
  • Managing and producing project deliverables such as project reports, graphic illustrations of design concepts, photographic documentation and analysis, research or feasibility studies.
  • Assisting project teams with scenario building on a range of scales from the parcel level to neighborhood or transit corridor.
  • Collaborating with VIA’s architectural team on master planning, mixed use, or transit-focused projects
