BART plays a central role meeting the bay area’s sustainability goals by providing a reliable transit option, and is essential to regional mobility, economy and livability. BART is also one of the largest consumer of electric power in Northern California. Over the past three years, and in two project phases, VIA Architecture led a team to help the District fully realize it’s 2010 signing of the APTA Transit Sustainability Commitment. Consistent with APTA’s program, the 2017 Sustainability Action Plan (SAP) identifies, evaluates, and prioritizes the most important actions BART can take to advance sustainability through 2025, as well as to implement a revised 2017 Sustainability Policy.

VIA is now providing an update to the BART Facility Standards Sustainability Guidelines (with Arup); developing a draft internal “Sustainability Registry” for use by project delivery staff; recommending sustainability training programs; and outlining how to insert sustainability best practice for sustainable procurement into both the Capital Improvement Program, and Operations and Maintenance Procurements.
