Right Size Parking

King County, WA

Over-building of parking supply leads to increased automobile ownership, vehicle miles traveled, congestion and housing costs. In addition, it presents barriers to smart growth and efficient transit service. VIA is developing a a set of recommendations to optimize both the supply of and demand for multifamily residential parking within King County. Strategies, developed in collaboration with ULI and Jurisdictional Technical Committees, aim to provide technical assistance, precedents, best practice programs, strategies and guidelines to reduce barriers and provide solutions for “rightsized” parking.

Our report supplements a wider study of parking utilization undertaken by King County Metro, the Center for Neighborhood Technologies and Rick Williams. The Right Sized Parking project is funded by a grant in the FHWA Value Pricing Program.
