SR-520 Bridge Replacement UD + Landbridge

Seattle, WA

WSDOT SR 520 connects the northern half of Seattle to its main suburbs – Redmond, Kirkland, and Bellevue. This 4.6-billion dollar project is the largest transportation investment in the history of the state. VIA acted as lead urban design for east and west corridors, and produced 60% design of two new BRT stations integrated into the highway. VIA’s most recent phase, 30% design of two large landscaped freeway park lids, include the 1,400-foot-long landscaped Montlake lid with integrated transit hub, and 100% design of the west approach bridge. VIA also completed the final concept design of SR 520 bridge railing, bike ped paths and outlooks using various delivery models.

Over the ten-year project duration, VIA’s work focused primarily on the interface between transit facilities, new roadway design, and integrated development planning in consultation with impacted communities.

VIA was awarded the 2015 AIA WA Council Civic Design Award for this project.
