The Hurontario/Main Street Study supports Ontario's Smart Growth Strategies, as well as MetroLinx's Regional Transportation Plan. This project aims to bring 'Main Street' rapid transit beyond Toronto's boundaries, linking major activity nodes in the Greater Toronto Area. VIA is working on a consultant team to establish a vision for the corridor that will integrate transit, land use and urban design features including a plan for the implementation of a higher-order transit system, including interim staging requirements.
Our current task is to define a set of "mobility hubs" along the Hurontario corridor and explore related options to encourage investment in planned rapid transit station areas by addressing development phasing, needed infrastructure improvements such as enhanced street connections, typical vs. proposed built form typologies, place-making opportunities, and ridership development. Two of these mobility hubs that we are developing are the first of 51 hubs to be analyzed and implemented by MetroLinx.
