Metro Vancouver, BC

TVIA Architecture was chief architect for the Millennium Line extension of Vancouver's SkyTrain. VIA directed the station planning and architectural design processes for the overall system and were architects for the detailed planning, design and construction of the Vancouver segment. Rupert, Renfrew and Commercial Stations were all designed to be the nuclei for long-term neighborhood urban infill.

The design and construction of the new Millennium Line Rapid Transit system is a remarkable achievement on many levels. The system opened in August 2002, on budget and on schedule, with an array of distinct architecturally designed stations sharing a common language of transparency, light and neighborhood welcome.

Renfrew, Commercial and Rupert Stations were designed as development catalysts within a transitional neighborhood. Derived from the same family of form and materials, they feature subtle differences in structure, siting, orientation and detail that result in three related but distinct pieces of architecture. All three stations display a playful dialogue between glulam wood and tubular steel structure that was designed to provide a subtle tectonic differentiation between the stations that is structurally honest and that will unfold to users of the stations over time. Wood elements were included to provide warmth of expression in contrast to the institutional feel of many transit stations. Wood has certain limitations that cause many public clients to preclude its use; its vulnerability to weathering and vandalism being the main concerns. This was overcome by the development of design rules that maximized the positive attributes of the wood while placing it out of touch and out of direct weather in order to achieve the planned 50 year life of the facilities.
