Metro Vancouver, BC
The Canada Line involved locating a mined tunnel below downtown Vancouver and finding innovative and thoughtful ways to locate programmed technical and operational spaces underground. The project also included fitting station structures such as entrances, emergency exits, triage response areas and ventilation structures into the downtown urban fabric. The underground work was very complex and required careful consideration and coordination.
VIA assisted in establishing the "Essential Elements" or visual guidelines for the government agency. We then subsequently became part of the winning design build team and designed five stations for the system, three of which were underground and one located at the transition of the underground to elevated portions of the alignment.
