Vancouver, BC
South East False Creek is well on its way to becoming Vancouver's "model sustainable community." Decades in the making, the mandate of this project has been to pioneer practices in sustainable urban development that can be implemented throughout the city and abroad.
South East False Creek comprises 2,500 dwellings, 200,000 sq ft of commercial and community space, 20 acres of park land, seawall, tramway, and neighbourhood energy utility. It is also the site of the temporary 2010 Olympic Village.
VIA Architecture was the architect and prime urban planning consultant responsible for developing the urban form framework, masterplan and design principles for the first two Official Development Plans (ODP).
Key Urban Design Issues:
-Public Realm--integration and interpretation of sustainable policy framework
-Sustainability--district heating, low impact street design and green building
-Brownfields redevelopment and waterfront revitalization
-Waterfront public access and public realm enhancement
-Historic preservation
-Transit integration
-Olympic Village, temporary users
-Affordable and social housing
VIA's pioneering work on this project has been featured at international Greenbuild conferences and in City of Vancouver urban design publications.
