Tacoma, WA
Our team has collaborated with Tacoma City staff for a full evaluation and update of land-use, transportation, and economic development policies affecting downtown. Tacoma's Downtown Plan, adopted in 2008, focuses on re-energizing the Core, strengthening the City's capacity to prioritize public realm and introduces a set of themes to differentiate Tacoma from its regional competitors.
The Plan also introduces additional urban strategies such as a Historic Transfer in Density Rights program, Design Review within sensitive neighborhoods and a tool kit for best practices in street design to achieve a series of walkable, livable streets.
Several implementation strategies as a result of the plan included Development Concepts for the Dome District and Brewery Districts. Here, VIA collaborated closely with resident stakeholders to provide a working framework to take full advantage of future regional transit investments in both AMTRAK and Sounder Commuter Rail.
