Vancouver, BC
VIA worked with TransLink and the City of Vancouver in a precinct planning process - a key element in the process of "community repair" in this neighbourhood.
At the heart of this process were two key transit-oriented development sites that were also related to the renovation of the existing Broadway Station.
The Hub was developed by International Land on the triangle site north of Broadway. Rezoned with unanimous Council and community support, it was built in tandem with Commercial Station, with 20,000 square feet of commercial space. It incorporates the public ticket hall and entrance to Commercial Station and a two-storey mixed-use commercial space at the street face. The project also includes a new connection to Broadway Station, by way of a new pedestrian bridge. South of Broadway, the community and government agencies supported the development of a movie theatre concept which attracted a conditional go-ahead from private development. It now needs further public agency funding and land transfer to be implemented.
