Vancouver, BC
VIA led the rezoning and urban design for this centerpiece of the Concord Pacific Place waterfront district. The waterfront neighborhood has a distinctive personality based on its history of both "rails and sails". Consisting of 1000 residential units in six mid- and high-rise developments, the neighborhood is held together by the preservation and re-use of the historic Pacific Railway Roundhouse machine shop, a remnant of the formerly industrial waterfront.
The completed Roundhouse Neighbourhood features, in addition to a unique and well-loved community centre, 12-foot sidewalks, double rows of street trees, the David Lam waterfront park, playgrounds, a diverse range of non-market and market housing, a new school, and an Urban Fare grocery store.
Winner: 1995 Gold Nugget Grand Award for Best Community Site Plan Under 100 Acres; 1997 Gold Nugget Grand Award for Best Rehabilitated Commercial Project; 2001 Lieutenant Governor's Award for the Roundhouse Community Centre.
