Over the last 25 years, VIA has built or sited approximately 90 mass transit stations including BRT, Streetcar, Light Rail (at grade, above grade and tunneled systems) and monorail (Seattle). We believe that the best station design does not consist of a stand-alone building; rather, that the buildings serve as backdrops for the life that these places support. Good urban spaces borrow from or extend existing adjacent communities.
We use a "systems approach" to create an overall vision for the transit stations, establish functional plans, and define programmatic and performance standards that enable high quality, award-winning architecture in context. A cohesive set of designs along a transit system can be achieved economically, whether the final design is produced by VIA or one of our sub-consultant architects.
Similarly, our work in transit-oriented development is extensive, with our implementation strategies constructed at Skytrain stations at Granville Station, Commercial Station, Production Way, and New Westminster. The firm's leadership has worked with APTA (American Public Transit Association) on the development of sustainability principles for the siting of high capacity transit alignments, including TOD and transit supportive land use principles.
