ENGINE 374

The 374 Pavilion was funded through the efforts of the Vancouver Lions Club as well as the current owner, the Vancouver Board of Parks and Recreation. The design aims at highlighting the railway origins of this building while also providing a strong identity for its new life as a unique community cultural centre. Its broader significance is that it symbolizes the pioneering origin of the city, and creates a powerfull public focus for the new False Creek North Community.

The retention of engine 374 and the railway turntable on this site will serve as permanent reminders of the original functions of this building complex. The transparent engine 374 enclosure of the Davie/Pacific intersection, with it's tree/trestle structure, is a reminder of the heavy timber structure of the adjacent historic building and an evocation of the City being carved out of the forest by the railway.
