4th Street Pedestrian Overpass
New Westminster, BC
The pedestrian overpass is a 10-foot-wide cantilevered “cable-stayed” bridge enhanced by the visual and functional link at 4th Street in the city between Columbia Street and the newly created Westminster Pier Park.
VIA’s design contributes to neighbourhood integration through improved pedestrian and cyclist connection with a comfortable and safe crossing experience for patrons. The location, shape and character of the overpass creates a recognizable icon in the landscape that celebrates seamless integration of the new waterfront park with the existing town.
The benefits of the design include improvement of accessibility for seniors, people with disabilities, bikes, and strollers, improving access to Pier Park, providing a clear, circular pattern that increases public safety and security while adhering to the principles of CPTED; extensive use of glass, installation of cost effective lighting to increase visibility, new signage to improve wayfinding.
