Golden Gate Transit San Rafael Transportation Center
San Rafael, CA
As part of the Kimley Horn team working for Golden Gate Transit, VIA is helping to relocate the San Rafael Transportation Center to accommodate the extension of the SMART alignment, creating an improved transit hub for Marin County. Over this multi-year project, VIA is leading the preliminary urban design and planning for environmental clearance. VIA’s scope includes station and facility architecture, historic station design considerations, and site alternatives to 30%.
Located prominently at the entrance to downtown San Rafael from US-101, the Transit Center serves thousands of daily boardings and alightings for both bus and SMART rail customers who live, work, and visit the San Rafael area from the greater Bay Area.
The project relocates the existing facility to a new site, aiming to optimize transit operations and placemaking goals with improved transportation services for transit riders, pedestrians, and bicyclists. A core design principle is for the center to integrate with the adjoining neighborhoods, providing a new, vibrant sustainably designed transit center that retains the unique character of San Rafael.
